Frequently Asked Questions

Who can see my Storytree stories?

By default, only people who are added to your Storytree can see the stories that you post. If you check the box to share individual stories publicly, the other members of the Storytree will be able to share that story on Facebook, etc.. The media files themselves are accessible only by a unique, obscure link.

Is Storytree for families only?

Storytree can be used by anyone. We realize that some of our friends are as good as family to us and we want to share our stories with them as well. We give you the freedom to create a Storytree and share it with anyone you want whether they are your best friend or an extended cousin or a member of your book club.

How does Storytree work?

Storytree was designed with all generations of the family in mind, young and old. You simply select "create a storytree" and are given the option to either record your own story, or ask someone in your family to record a story of their own. We hope that you make Storytreee the place where your family captures and shares memories for generations to come.

Can I download my stories from my Storytree?

Yes. There is a "download" button that appears when you expand a story after it has been uploaded to our servers. This is a direct link to the media file uploaded. You may need to right-click (or ctrl-click) the link and choose "Save link as..." if the download does not start right away.

I can’t view the stories! What do I do?

First, refresh your browser and see if that works. If you are still having trouble please send us an email and we will try our best to fix the problem asap. On devices such as an iPad, you may need to scroll down to see the stories.

My webcam's not working! What do I do?

If it asks for permission, you must click "Allow", then "Remember", and then "Close". If you can't see anything, there may be a few reasons. First, you can try going to the settings (right-click, then click settings), click the camera icon on the right, and choose a different camera. Second, there is a problem with old versions of Flash that have the Google Voice plugin installed. Try upgrading your version of Flash, or using the Google Chrome web browser. If you're still having problems, email us.

There is a known bug where if you record a video, then record again over it, and then press replay, the video will not playback the first time. Don't worry, you didn't lose your video! Just hit replay again when it's finished to see it.

What do I talk about?

You can record stories about just about anything. We provide a list of interesting questions to help you get started. Simply click through our carefully selected list of questions to find the one that fits. We have found that even though you may not consider yourself a good storyteller, you might just surprise yourself once you start using Storytree. Check out our tips, too!

How long should my recording be?

We have found that good story is usually between 1 to 3 minutes. The risk with recording longer stories is that the audience watching your story might loose interest and stop paying attention.

Can I upload multiple files at the same time?

Not yet. We don't want files just "dumped" onto the Storytree in bulk, but there will be some mechanism to upload multiple files at once in due time.

Can I use Storytree if I don’t have a computer camera?

Not yet. Currently you need a computer camera in order to use Storytree. We are currently building an app for the iPhone and other mobile devices that will make it easy to capture stories on the go. We are also considering building storytree storytelling booths that you can visit, just in case you dont have a mobile camera or computer camera.
